The Paper Moon Project Begins - a Salt Lake City Art Project Origin Story
I have three friends that helped me build my paper moon. Which eventually led to this Salt Lake City Art Project.
I was throwing a bootlegger ball, and I am a lunatic, always looking to the moon for guidance and wonder. So what better thing to have and build then a giant paper moon. Nick Marucci helped me design it, I bought the material, and Peter Sessions painted it. While I was getting it ready for my birthday (celebrating 45 revolutions around the sun) my friend Peter was giving me a rah rah pump up speech.
I’m used to getting these, my dad used to give them to me all the time; but it had been a long time, and Peter was hitting on my art, and my ability to connect to people, not my career, not my love life. He also talked about how my voice needed to be heard, and with these ideas germinating in my head the Paper Moon Project was born!
As far as inspirational pieces. The tiny desk concert series is an inspiration. They bring in some of the most amazing artists and have them strip their work down and present it in a certain way.
The paper moon was designed to be portable, and this is key as I want it to travel to new areas and be part of the ambiance. Our music section will feature mini concerts, with a cover of an old song refashioned by the artist and then an original.
With movement I can’t wait to have dancers, flow artists, choreographers, ballerina’s, burlesque, belly dancers and more performing something from the past, and then a newer original choreography. You’ll see this in our Movement Section.
I have been going to events at two local places, and both have served a source of finding new art as well as fun. One is the Boxcar X here in Salt Lake. The other is the Clubhouse SLC.
Both of these spaces have curated open mic’s (Poetry & Music) brought in figure models, and introduced me to all sorts of dance and flow artists as well as DJ’s and live acts.
This is why I can’t wait to get local artists to show in detail what they love about their inspiration (old artists) and what they are doing now. You will be able to find these in our Visual Art section.
To also be mentioned is my poetic friends, Paulina, Lianna, and others who have reignited my love for prose. I’ve even started my own beat poetry series, and the exposure to the beautiful minds are expanding my mind and warming my heart. You’ll be able to see these in our Spoken Word(s) section.
Vanessa my forever partner has been encouraging me to embrace my own creativity and use my talents to create something I am passionate about. I am so thankful to her for giving me space and time to pursue my dreams and was the first to give me the nudge to build this. I am so excited.
I have a lot of ambition, I’d like to get two new videos, blog posts, and podcasts done per month. Thank you friends for exploring the art with me!
